About the Work
Aurora Polaris is a double-sided painting that resists the conventional rectangular picture plane. The work is designed to be physically rotated and allows the viewer to experience it from different orientations.
The front focuses heavily on the dramatic convergence of sky, water, horizon and light. The reverse focuses heavily on the subjects (but from the other side and much closer), the reflections of a man and woman within the water.
A custom magnetic display system allows the canvas to be rotated and experienced from either side.
Aurora Polaris was created in response to the screen-based experience of visual art. Its unusual shape, double-sided presentation, and physical interactivity are intended to emphasize qualities that cannot be reproduced by digital means.
