Acrylic on Level 3 canvas
48 × 48 inches
(122 × 122 cm)
Unique work — 1 of 1
Painted on both sides
Aurora Polaris is a double-sided acrylic painting that resists the conventional rectangular picture plane.
Measuring 48 × 48 inches, the canvas is presented as a diamond rather than a conventional square. The work is painted on both sides and is designed to be physically rotated, allowing the viewer to experience the painting from different orientations.
The front depicts a dramatic landscape of sky, water, horizon and light. The reverse introduces a figure within the landscape and incorporates a depicted reflection, creating a second visual experience rather than simply functioning as the back of the painting.
The physical presentation is integral to the work. A custom magnetic display system allows the canvas to be rotated and experienced from either side.
Aurora Polaris was created in response, in part, to the increasingly screen-based experience of visual art. Its unusual shape, double-sided construction and physical interactivity are intended to emphasize qualities of painting that cannot be completely reproduced by a conventional digital image.
The work is intended to be experienced physically as an object as well as visually as a painting.
